You absolutely need to look at a photographers’ work to make a decision about what style you want for your photos and while a good photographer can make any location look fantastic, it’s SO important that you choose a location that reflects you personally. Think about the things that inspire you, consider places that have sentimental meaning or your hobbies or style. Make it personal and not just another session in the place that all the local photographers shoot at, the very best locations are ones that are a little outside the box and just that little bit different.
Think about what you like to do together. Is your normal Saturday routine to have coffee out somewhere? Then shoot that. If you love to go for an early morning hike, then that’s what your session should be about. Your session can just about be anywhere, bookshop, markets, picnics, mountains, castle ruins, bike riding or the beach. Rather than standing awkwardly in a park not really knowing what to do with your hands, make your session about you and what you love doing.
Brainstorm a little together and come up with some ideas, I bet once you start thinking about it, you’ll have enough ideas for a dozen sessions. Once you have a list of ideas you can start to think creatively about them and what mood or concept you want to achieve. For example, if you’re having a family shoot with young children, it’s likely to be action packed and you’ll need somewhere with space for them to run and play or something interesting for them to focus on to keep from boredom setting in, perhaps a barbecue on the beach or a trip to an aquarium. If it’s just you two lovebirds, consider a cosy in-home session with you both just hanging out on a Saturday morning or a trip to a fairground.
Now is a really good time to start thinking about the endless possibilities, start the ball rolling by getting a date booked in for a session later in the year then talk to your photographer about creating something beautiful and totally unique to you, you’ll find most of us adore a bit of quirky.
