Having a list of outdoor maternity photography ideas before a shoot can be really helpful as there is so much to think about during the session. The light, what’s in the background, directing the subject where to stand, what to do with their hands, feet, face, smile/not smile, thinking of things to talk about to help them relax because let’s face it, 99% of people really quite dislike having their photo taken, even when they really want their photo taken!
Inspiration comes in many forms when it comes to the artistry of making beautiful images. After years of photographing hundreds of families, I still go to a session with a mental list of ideas, images that I will strive to capture, some are tried and tested favourites that I know clients love, sometimes they are new ideas. Preparing is very important but the bit I really love is the magic that happens in each and every session, whether it be pregnancy, newborn or family, it’s always there, hiding below the surface. We find that perfect light, the clients relax and start to enjoy their session and we generally just have an hour or two of fun.
There is something so very special about a maternity session, it’s a celebration of a major turning point in the lives of two people, two people who are about to be bonded together forever. They will share in the highs and lows of parenting, it will be the most wonderful and at times, difficult thing they do. Documenting that time when a couple are about to become a family fills my heart with love for the journey they are embarking on.
Siobhan and Stuart are among the loveliest people I have had the pleasure to photograph, their love for each other and the excitement in this session for the imminent arrival of their baby shines through in each and every photograph. Only a few short weeks after this shoot I met their gorgeous little baby boy, check back to the blog soon to see these guys oozing love in their newborn session.
